Libraries have evolved beyond silent reading rooms, but quiet still matters. Modern branches host community programs, collaborative study sessions, and children’s activities—often simultaneously. Managing sound across these overlapping uses determines whether a library functions or frustrates.
Quiet design materials must also meet the practical demands of public buildings. Our soundproof wood walls and ceiling systems feature durable finishes that withstand heavy daily use, Class A fire ratings for public assembly, and configurations that integrate with complex architectural geometries—from traditional reading rooms to contemporary designs that blur the line between indoors and out.
The AIA Honor Award-winning Mott Branch Library features a tessellated ceiling of twenty-one facets spanning 115,000 linear feet, inspired by Underground Railroad quilt geometry. Rulon’s Endure™ engineered polymer system maintains color consistency across the indoor/outdoor transitional ceiling while delivering the quiet performance the space requires.
Today’s libraries combine quiet reading rooms, group study, children’s programs, and community meeting space under one roof. Rulon’s Aluratone panels control noise in entry halls and circulation areas, Linear systems add warmth and absorption in reading rooms, and Endure™ Linear extends the same look to exterior canopies and covered terraces.
At Mott Branch Library, Endure™ Linear 800 creates an indoor-to-outdoor ceiling inspired by quilt geometry from the Underground Railroad, swapping the originally specified Black Locust for a more consistent, lower-cost engineered polymer. At South San Francisco’s Community Civic Campus, custom curved baffles bring movement to the library and learning spaces. And in the Gilder Center’s research library, 361 uniquely shaped baffles form a canopy around a central column.
Aluratone acoustic panels are well suited to busy entry halls and circulation areas, while Linear wood slat systems add warmth and absorption in reading rooms and study areas.
Yes. Endure™ Linear carries the look of wood to exterior canopies and covered terraces. At Mott Branch Library, Endure™ Linear 800 creates a continuous indoor-to-outdoor ceiling.
Rulon’s systems are LBC Red List Free and Indoor Advantage™ Gold certified, FSC® certified, and carry an ASTM E84 Class A fire rating.
