Acoustic Ceiling Standards for Education

A technical reference for architects and specifiers navigating NRC, RT60, and ANSI S12.60 requirements for ceiling systems in K-12 and higher education projects.

ASTM E84 Class A | FSC Chain of Custody | LEED v4/v4.1 | WELL v2 | LBC Red List Free | HPD v2.1

The Standards Landscape Is Not Self-Explanatory

Acoustic ceiling specification for education projects involves a set of overlapping standards, testing methodologies, and certification frameworks that interact in ways the individual documents do not always make clear. ANSI S12.60 sets the performance floor for classrooms. ASTM E84 governs fire code compliance for ceiling materials. LEED v4/v4.1 requires acoustic performance documentation formatted to specific credit requirements. WELL v2 addresses reverberation and background noise as occupant health factors. The Living Building Challenge Red List prohibits specific materials regardless of other certifications a product holds.

Each of these frameworks is independently navigable. The friction is that they all apply to the same ceiling specification decision simultaneously, and the documentation they each require does not always come pre-assembled from a single product source.

This page maps the standards that govern acoustic ceiling specification in educational environments to the Rulon systems that meet them and the documentation available for each. It is designed for use during schematic design, when standard selection and product shortlisting happen, and during construction documents, when submittal packages are assembled.

Systems and Standards Coverage

NRC test reports and acoustic performance data available for LEED v4/v4.1 EQ and WELL v2 Sound Comfort submittals. Certifications: ASTM E84 Class A, Indoor Advantage Gold, LEED v4/v4.1 EQ, WELL v2

Linear Wood Ceilings Open linear wood systems with FSC Chain of Custody certification and HPD v2.1 documentation. Red List Free compliant. Supports LEED v4/v4.1 MR credits and WELL v2 Sound Comfort submissions. NRC test reports available by configuration. Certifications: FSC Chain of Custody, ASTM E84 Class A, LBC Red List Free, HPD v2.1, LEED v4/v4.1 MR

Acoustic Wood Baffle Ceilings Vertically suspended wood baffle ceilings for large-volume education spaces. FSC Chain of Custody certified, HPD v2.1 documentation available, Red List Free compliant. NRC performance data available for reverberation modeling in gymnasiums, cafeterias, and auditoriums. Certifications: FSC Chain of Custody, ASTM E84 Class A, LBC Red List Free, HPD v2.1

Grilles Wood grille ceiling systems with a high potential for acoustic performance and FSC Chain of Custody certification. Suited to spaces where open visual depth and acoustic control are concurrent requirements. Certifications: FSC Chain of Custody, ASTM E84 Class A

Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, Washington, D.C.

Benjamin Banneker Academic High School is a reference project for acoustic ceiling specification under layered standards requirements. The project required ANSI S12.60 compliance across core learning spaces, ASTM E84 Class A compliance for all ceiling materials, LEED Indoor Environmental Quality documentation, and indoor air quality certification aligned with the building’s wellness commitments.

Rulon Aluratone and linear systems were specified to meet all of those requirements from a single product source, with NRC test reports, Indoor Advantage Gold certificates, and LEED credit letters provided as a coordinated submittal package. The project has served as a specification reference for architects working on similarly constrained urban K-12 projects.
