Wood Acoustic Ceiling Schools Projects

Rulon ceiling systems specified across K-12 and higher education — from urban public schools governed by strict state agency standards to university buildings pursuing LEED and WELL certification.

What the Project Record Shows

Specifying a ceiling system for an education project means committing to a product that will perform across decades of heavy use, meet the compliance requirements of the authority having jurisdiction, and hold up against the material transparency scrutiny that LEED, WELL, and programs like the Center for Public Schools now requires.

The question architects and facility planners ask before specifying is not just whether a system meets the spec sheet. It is whether it has been installed in comparable projects, under comparable constraints, and whether the outcome held. A gymnasium at a high-density urban school in New York City presents different acoustic and durability demands than a collaborative learning pavilion at a university research campus in Florida. The ceiling system has to be right for the specific context.

Rulon linear wood ceilings, Aluratone panels, acoustic wood baffle ceilings, and Curvalon systems have been specified across both of those contexts — and across the full range between them. The projects below represent completed installations where system selection, acoustic performance, and certification requirements were all factors in the specification.

Systems Across the Education Portfolio

Linear Wood Ceilings: Specified in classrooms, libraries, and collaborative learning spaces where biophilic design and visual warmth are both priorities. FSC Chain of Custody certified. Supports LEED v4/v4.1 Materials and Resources credits. Certifications: FSC Chain of Custody, ASTM E84 Class A

Aluratone: Acoustic ceiling panels for core learning spaces, corridors, and multi-purpose environments. High NRC performance for ANSI S12.60 compliance. Moisture-resistant for demanding K-12 maintenance environments. Certifications: ASTM E84 Class A, Indoor Advantage Gold

Acoustic Wood Baffle Ceilings: Vertically suspended systems for gymnasiums, cafeterias, auditoriums, and large-volume spaces. Maximizes absorptive surface area where a horizontal ceiling plane cannot deliver sufficient reverberation control. Certifications: ASTM E84 Class A, FSC Chain of Custody

Curvalon: Curved wood ceiling systems for auditoriums, performing arts spaces, and signature architectural environments in higher education. Custom geometry with the same FSC and ASTM E84 Class A certification as the broader Rulon portfolio. Certifications: FSC Chain of Custody, ASTM E84 Class A

Selected Education Projects

Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, Washington, D.C. A flagship urban K-12 project where Rulon systems were specified to meet SCA-level acoustic standards alongside LEED Indoor Environmental Quality requirements. Aluratone and linear systems across core learning spaces achieved documented NRC performance aligned with ANSI S12.60 and supported the building’s Indoor Advantage Gold IAQ commitment.

USF Judy Genshaft Honors College, Tampa, Florida A higher education project where sustainability documentation, material transparency, and LEED certification were central to the specification. Rulon linear and baffle systems contributed to the project’s LEED Materials and Resources credits, with FSC Chain of Custody and HPD documentation provided as part of the specification package.

Murray-Massenburg Middle School, Virginia A K-12 renovation where Endure Linear was specified for high-traffic corridors and support spaces alongside linear systems in core classrooms. The project required consistent materiality across spaces with significantly different durability demands — a common challenge in school renovation work.
