Ceiling systems engineered for classroom speech intelligibility, fire code compliance, and indoor air quality — specified by architects and facility planners across K-12 districts from New York City to California.
ASTM E84 Class A | Indoor Advantage Gold | FSC Chain of Custody | LEED v4/v4.1
K-12 school ceilings carry requirements that many commercial ceiling specifications do not. ANSI S12.60 sets maximum background noise levels and reverberation times for occupied classrooms. The New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) layers additional acoustic and material standards on top of state code. California’s Division of the State Architect (DSA) requires ASTM E84 Class A compliance and enforces indoor air quality thresholds that align with the Center for Green Schools criteria. Across all of these frameworks, the ceiling system is one of the primary levers the design team controls.
The specification problem is not finding a ceiling that looks right. It is finding a system that meets fire code, achieves documented NRC performance for ANSI S12.60 compliance, holds Indoor Advantage Gold certification for IAQ, and can withstand the physical and maintenance demands of a K-12 environment — all within the project’s material budget and schedule.
Rulon acoustic wood baffle ceilings, linear systems, and aluratone panel systems are engineered to meet that set of requirements. Each system carries third-party certification documentation that supports LEED v4/v4.1 credit submissions and satisfies the material transparency requirements increasingly embedded in public school specifications.
Aluratone A high-performance acoustic ceiling panel for classrooms, corridors, and multi-purpose spaces. Achieves NRC values suited to ANSI S12.60 compliance. Moisture-resistant construction for humid environments and demanding cleaning protocols. Certifications: ASTM E84 Class A, Indoor Advantage Gold
Linear Wood Ceilings Open linear ceiling systems that deliver acoustic absorption through a solid wood layer backed by felt spacers and absorptive material. Suited to classrooms, libraries, and collaborative learning spaces where biophilic design is a priority. Certifications: FSC Chain of Custody, ASTM E84 Class A, LEED v4/v4.1 MR
Acoustic Wood Baffle Ceilings Vertically suspended acoustic wood baffle ceilings for gymnasiums, cafeterias, and large multi-purpose spaces. Maximizes exposed surface area for diffraction and sound scattering in high-volume, hard-surfaced environments. Certifications: ASTM E84 Class A, FSC Chain of Custody
Endure Linear A durable linear ceiling system for high-traffic spaces including corridors, locker rooms, and entry vestibules. Engineered to maintain acoustic and finish performance across K-12 maintenance cycles. Certifications: ASTM E84 Class A
Flat Panels Flat panels for spaces requiring a flush ceiling profile. Reflective, low-cost surfaces for classrooms and support spaces. Certifications: ASTM E84 Class A, Indoor Advantage Gold

Benjamin Banneker Academic High School required ceiling systems that met SCA-level acoustic performance standards while supporting the building’s indoor air quality and wellness commitments. Rulon Aluratone and linear systems were specified across core learning spaces, achieving documented NRC performance aligned with ANSI S12.60 and qualifying for LEED Indoor Environmental Quality credits.
The project demonstrates what the specification requires in practice: a ceiling system that meets fire code, delivers measurable acoustic performance, satisfies IAQ certification thresholds, and holds up in a high-use school environment. The Banneker project has since served as a reference specification for architects working on similar urban K-12 projects governed by strict material and performance standards.
